Literacy

I aim to foster literacy through a variety of engaging daily activities and projects.

In literature circles, students have an opportunity to engage with complex texts, to practice comprehension strategies in a supportive environment, and to conduct group discussions with supports and scaffolding.

Choice Boards

I utilize choice boards as a daily literacy activity. Choice boards allow students to choose between different self-directed literacy activities that focus on literacy strategies and techniquesand vocabulary. They allow students to put into practice some of the concepts that we have learned about in class. Choice board period also provides time for guided reading or to meet with students who need additional teacher support.

Writing Workshop

In writing workshop, students are able to create their own original writing pieces of different genres and styles. Students are engaged in all aspects of the writing process; they brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, and publish their final pieces! The end result is a piece of writing that they can really be proud of.

S.Q.U.I.R.T.

It is important that students have time to read independently. Each day, I give my students 15-20 minutes for S.Q.U.I.R.T. (Super Quiet Un-Interupted Reading Time). During this time, students can read any book of their choice independently. It is also a time for students to get caught up on work, and for me to meet with students who need extra support.
