Curriculum

Literacy

Within my classroom, I hope to implement an engaging and multi-faceted literacy curriculum. Through this curriculum, students will learn new literacy strategies, engage in collaborative literature circles, and have time to practice strategies and concepts independently.

Writing workshop is an invaluable time for students to generate their own writing pieces, merging their own ideas and experiences with the techniques learned in class. In writing workshop, I want to incorporate a variety of fiction and non-fiction writing projects.

Math

The teaching of math at the elementary school level requires a lot of differentiation and support. I aim to differentiate for students by teaching multiple methods of understanding and solving problems, by offering space for exploration of math concepts, and by scaffolding student learning through the use of manipulatives, visual representations, and group activities.

I also think that it is incredibly important to make math relevant to students, to relate it to students' lived experiences and funds of knowledge.

Science

Science is a time for exploration and experimentation. I have tried to encourage students' scientific minds by encouraging them to ask questions, and to take steps to investigate their hypetheses. Within science units, I have encouraged students to investigate through both hands-on activities and through research projects.

Social Studies

I see social studies units as an opportunity for students to explore human societies - including their own - through critical and creative lenses. I also think that social studies units lend themselves to multidisciplinary approach; I have done my best to integrate literacy, math, art, and music into my social studies curriculum.
